The story begins in the early 2000s when Rocafella Records was at its peak. Dame Dash, co-founder of Rocafella Records along with Jay Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke was a fearless CEO. He was known for being aggressive and always showed an unwavering loyalty to his artists.

One of those artists was Cam’ron. Fresh on the scene with Rocafella, he was a rising star on the label who had recently dropped his hit album, ‘Come Home with Me.’

CAM’RON BLOWS UP

With the success of the album, Cam’ron wanted more. He wanted a distribution deal for his own record company, Diplomat Records.

At first he tried to approach Dame Dash about it, but Dame explained why he couldn’t do it (watch video).

With that said Cam’ron kept feeling around Def Jam on how he could get a distribution deal for his own label. 

Cam’rons persistence paid off. He was approached by then Def Jam president, Kevin Liles with a distribution deal for Diplomat Records. This is where the story gets tricky. Dame Dash explains (watch video).

HOW DAME DASH PULLED IT OFF

When the time came to finalize the deal, Dame Dash made a surprise appearance.

He walked into the meeting and demanded that the distribution deal contract be changed from Def Jam records to Rocafella Records. He explains why Def Jam had no choice but to as he asked.
