Filipe Anjos is the founder of the clothing brand, African. His parents hail from São Tome and Principe, Africa. Filipe was born in Portugal and now resides in the UK where he launched African.
From working in the tech industry Filipe knows first hand the gap that exists when it comes to educational and professional opportunities between countries in Africa and other countries in the world.
Therefore he took action and created the clothing brand, African. His aim is use profits from the brand to bring access and opportunity through technology development in the African continent. Filipe states, “We help by using our profits for technological development in Africa. We do so mainly by providing technological devices and technology education.”
He states that profits from African are also allocated to give opportunities to artists and creators that would like to bring their art to renown platforms.
Filipe states, “At this moment we are working in the country of Sao Tome and Principe. The long term goal is to move and impact as many African countries as possible.”
Filipe granted us at Change The Game TV an exclusive interview:
What inspired you to launch African?
The inspiration came from wanting to have my own clothing brand where together with other creators we can develop quality products with a significant touch.
Exactly how can we further technological development in Africa?
Personally, I wanted to do something that would move the technology attention towards Africa. I created the brand African, which is more on my creative side, and with the profits we use them to help and collaborate on technological development in Africa.
What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered in launching African?
The biggest challenge was finding good suppliers. I “lost” a lot of money while working with different suppliers in the beginning, but is part of the process. Having to do everything in house from marketing to finances is not a simple task. But I really believe in the work that we are doing so that keeps me motivated.
What advice can you give to a person looking to launch their own clothing brand?
There are a lot of clothing brands in the world but there is also a lot of people in the world. At the same time it is very easy to just do what other people are doing. My advice is that if you start your clothing brand, or any other business, think outside of the box and make sure that it has a soul.
Make sure you really believe in what you are bringing to people, that you believe in the concept. The soul is the true power because there is no other soul like yours. Once you have that go out there and be loud smartly about the brand, independent of the business you launch.
STAY UP TO DATE WITH AFRICAN
